Tooth Extraction Unveiled: Your Essential Guide

The pain caused by an emerging or infected tooth can be nightmarish. The discomfort can challenge one’s ability to indulge in routine work and evoke feelings of fear and panic. In such scenarios, your doctor may recommend complete tooth removal to end your misery and relieve your oral distress.

When a tooth cannot be restored or saved due to decay, trauma, overcrowding, or impaction, emergency tooth extraction is often considered one of the most effective dental solutions. During this procedure, your dentist carefully removes the affected tooth via simple extraction or minor surgical procedures.

While tooth extraction can contribute to our oral well-being, most people would concur that it is an unpleasant process. But at Woden Dental Centre in Canberra, recognised as the best dental clinic, we strive to make the process as pain-free as possible. Understanding the process, recovery, and aftercare can pave the way for a smoother experience and more positive outcome.

Our Protocol For Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction can happen over a single or multiple sessions. Here’s how your extraction process works at Woden Dental Centre.

Dental Assessment

Complete an examination of your affected tooth to determine the cause of the extraction, such as decay, impaction, trauma, crowded teeth, infection, or periodontal and gum disease.

Aneasthetising & Prepping

Numbing the area with local or general anaesthesia. Our oral surgeon makes a small incision when a tooth has broken off at the gum line or has not broken through at all.

Tooth Extraction

Gentle tooth extraction uses forceps to loosen the tooth from its socket without damaging the nearby tissues. The loosened tooth is carefully extracted, leaving the rest of the oral cavity intact.

Post-Extraction Care

The area will be sutured to close the gum, and the bleeding will be controlled with a cotton pad. Our dentists will schedule follow-up appointments to check on the healing process.

Recovery Tips For Tooth Extraction

As the anaesthesia wears off after your teeth removal, you may experience pain where your tooth has been extracted. Here are some easy tips to help you find relief from the pain:

  • Take only the painkillers prescribed by your dentists.
  • Take rest for a couple of days and avoid strenuous work or exercise.
  • Take care to brush carefully. Avoid the extraction site until it heals.
  • Use mouthwash for the first 24 hours post-extraction.
  • Hydrate yourself adequately. Avoid alcohol, carbonated drinks, and hot beverages until the extracted site heals.
  • Contact your dentist if you have swelling, pain or fever. These signs may indicate infection or other complications.

Learn More About Tooth Extraction

What is the recovery duration post‑tooth extraction?

Generally, the recovery period depends on the complexity of the extraction. A simple one may require only a few days to heal. However, surgical tooth extractions and other complicated tooth removals may require more than two weeks to completely heal.

Is it okay to follow a regular diet after tooth extraction?

It is best to avoid hot, spicy, and hard foods for the first few days and have soft foods instead. You can have a normal diet as your extraction site heals. However, it is best to be cautious for a few days.

What symptoms will I experience if the extraction site is infected or has other complications?

You should look out for:

  • Excessive bleeding
  • Incessant pain
  • Significant swelling
  • High body temperature
  • Pus from the extraction site
  • Bad mouth odour

Contact your dentist if you experience any of these symptoms.
